On March 15th 1966, Paul Van Doren and his partners Jim Van Doren, Gordy Lee and Serge D’Elia opened the first Vans Shop in Anaheim (California, USA). At the time, however, all of the shoes in the shop were purely designed as display items and were not intended to be sold. This meant that the twelve customers who stopped by during the morning could not buy the shoes there and then, but were asked to return in the afternoon. In the meantime, Paul Van Doren and Gordy Lee manufactured the ordered models in the factory next door to the shop. Come the afternoon, however, as no change could be given for the purchased products, the customers were each asked to return the next day with the correct change.
Note: all twelve customers appeared the next day and settled their bills.
